It just kinda depends on your personality. When I first started going out with my girlfriend, I just hung out with her and talked to her on msn. About a week later, we started going out.

If the people are laughing their butts at you, simply ignore the fuck out of them and try to respect the girl and talke to her nicely.
It might resolved your problems in Relations.
