If I were to ask a random sample of people whether they believed in freedom they would probably answer yes. But what are the meanings conjured by this word?
For example:
1.) Do the participants of this Forum consider themselves free, and why, or why not? 2.) Is freedom always limited, or is there an ideal state of freedom to which we should be working? 3.) Is freedom given to us by others, or can it only be taken away by others? 4.) Is freedom an illusion which conceals the nature and necessity of control? 5.) If we do not agree with something, or someone, is it sufficient to voice our disagreement, even though we know that no one is listening? 6.) It might be argued, and certainly was by the British, that rebel Americans acted illegally in fighting for their freedom. Is legality equivalent with justice? 7.) Is freedom a non-issue because already achieved as far as is practically possible in the "democratic free West" and all we need to do is maintain and extend this freedom? 8.) Is freedom always an issue requiring "eternal vigilance"and an issue of responsibilities.
